Meet Raider, Puppy Abandoned at PETCO

This is Raider (Formerly known as Nutters) who was abandoned at PETCO on Monday October 4. Luckily we were able to find a foster home for him and he’s safe! We wouldn’t be able to help without our wonderful foster volunteers and donor.

This sweet puppy has a sad past, but a great future ahead of him. We got an urgent call from the Cookeville PETCO store; bright and early one Monday morning, someone had driven up and dropped off this puppy in front of the store. They drove off, leaving the puppy (in a tiny cat carrier) with a note. ‘I’m a lab / chihuahua mix. My family had to move and couldn’t take me. Please find me a good home.’ Of course we had to take him in… he’s been treated for fleas, ticks and worms and will soon be neutered and up to date on shots. His foster mom says he’s a snuggle bug! The whole first day he was in foster care, he whined and looked for his family who had left him. Now he’s adjusting well to foster care, knows how to Sit and also appears to be house trained. He would be best with a family who is home a lot, as he prefers to hang out with people. He’s about 4 and a half months old and will be ready to go home with you soon.

A.A.R.F. In The Herald-Citizen

Barn donated to AARF to boost canine rescue efforts

For clarification purposes, we would like to address a miscommunication that was printed in Monday’s Herald-Citizen (4/5/2010).  A.A.R.F. was at one point looking at the possibility of renovating two barns in Cookeville for use as a shelter, but it was determined quite some time ago that the use of these barns would not be in our best interest.  Instead, we are working on renovating a building on the property of one of our board members.  Although not as large as the two barns, this building already has electric and concrete and is secure and the cost will be much less expensive then renovating even one of those barns.
The new barn referenced in the article is going to be used as a temporary shelter for puppies, and we can’t wait to show you the pictures of it. Check back soon to see the renovations!
As always, we appreciate the support of our local newspaper!

Update on Wally; Doing Great, Looking for a Home!

Wally is doing WONDERFUL! He just recovered from a mild virus and is getting back to his, now, normal, wonderful, sweet and HUNGRY self! The only thing he would attempt to eat during his bout with this virus was bologna…he is very strong willed and has the courage to fight everything that tries to take him down. Luckily for him AND us – because we have ALL fallen in love with little Wally. I have decided for certain that there is nothing better in this world than a big, wet, sloppy puppy kiss across the face from a pup who was so scared that he nearly attacked me in a parking lot…talk about a compliment! We expect him to go in for neuter surgery in about 3 weeks or so. In the meantime, Wally is looking for a temporary foster home or he can be pre-adopted.

Wally the Wal-Mart rescue needs a foster

Wednesday, March 3, 2010:  9:00AM

Great News!  “Wally”, formerly named “New Guy” (Thanks Facebook fans), had a great night sleep, and a little bit more bologna before bed, and when I woke up this morning, he was wagging and barking and demanding attention like the other pups in foster care!!  I opened his crate, he licked my hand, and then put his face up to mine and licked my nose…I was wrong about this one, and SO HAPPY to report that!  He scarfed down his food very quickly this morning again.  Once he realizes that he will be fed twice a day, he should calm down some.  We will work on worming and vaccinating this afternoon after my husband gets home to assist.

Thanks for helping to name him, New Guy is now Wally

Would anyone be willing to foster him for a few weeks??  If you don’t have an active foster app on file, please visit the following link and complete:  https://aarf-tn.com/foster/foster-app/

Update on Parvo Puppies

Click here to read the full story on these puppies from the beginning.

JACK is HOME! He arrived on Monday, hungry, healthy and full of energy. He is being transferred to Jenny’s foster home in Monterey to recover and get some special TLC today~

I picked up Jack on Monday, and brought Sandy in to replace him. Although there was no sign of blood in stool, she was vomitting bile and was continuing to need fluids. I visited with her today and she looked good. Bright, alert, but still not ready to come home. We are all praying that she will start eating tomorrow -which is always the indicator that they are ready to be released. Dr. McLaughlin and Warlick believe she will recover just fine.

James is just about out of quarantine – no problems, no symptoms, no reactions. He is SUCH a gorgeous pup and will make someone an excellent addition to their family. He stole a toy out of the toy box (apparently he did not like the one I provided him with). Even during playtime, he carried it with him everywhere. I am in love with this pup….he is such a sweetheart!

Sage is my little hoover vacuum. Running around during playtime trying to pick up anything and everyting in an attempt to eat it! SUCH a sweet and loveable personality. Follows me everywhere when she has her run time. No symptoms, reactions or signs. 4 days left in quarantine!

Shannon….she must have some pyranese in her….talk about a sweet, slow, happy-go-lucky personality….she is definitely a keeper!!! Whoever adopts her will be so lucky to have her. No symptoms, signs or reactions. I will really miss her when she is transferred to another foster home!!!

Cassidy has found her peace. We added a new addition on the left side of her on Monday and she seems to have settled down some. no more howling or screaming to get out – just enjoys the company of our new boy to the left of her. She sure did enjoy her playtime tonight. She ran like “Mighty Dog” around my “L” shaped basement – knocking into things, tipping things over – she had SUCH a blast. She ended by jumping on my legs and into my arms for a little nuzzle into my pony tai. She is obsessed with my hair!

Kora – SUCH a sweetie!!! So quiet – never makes a sound – until playtime. It’s like she knows that she is here for a reason and she never complains about it. She accepts it and waits for me to come pick her up and cuddle with her. Instead of playtime, she just likes for me to carry her with me while I clean out her crate, make her meal, and get her meds ready. Yes, it is dificult to do this one-handed…but worth it. She likes to give kisses on my nose….she loves my nose!

Natalie – She always seemed like she was cold…so I moved her closer to the wood stove. She sleeps through EVERYTHING now! She LOVES the heat!!! But when she wakes up, watch out! She is ready to PLAY!!!!!!!

Buck – What can I say about awesome little Buck. He has a gant about him that excudes confidence in a dog – let alone a puppy! His newest game is “Hey! Let’s see where foster mom stashed the empty cans of food!!!” It is not uncommon for me to find him amidst 2 or 3 at a time. What an awesome dog….anyone would be blessed to have him as part of their family!

As you can see, everyone is doing great! We have NO negative news to report. We have 4 remaining days in quarantine until these WONDERFUL pups can be transferred to other foster homes. Assuming they continue to show no more signs through Saturday, they will receive their second vaccination on Saturday, transferred to new foster homes if available, and scheduled for the spay/neuter surgeries a week or so later. We always try to wait at least 7 days after administering a vaccination before sending them in to be fixed. We want their immune system top notch to prepare for the surgery!

Vet bills are piling up now. Jack’s treatment cost around $300. We got more meds today for prevention in the ones here – another $400. Sandy’s treatment should be somewhere similar to Jack’s if she can come home today. $100/day. We are just continuing to pray for each of these pups, and thanking Best Friends for their continued support of our rescue efforts – and for always extending us the credit that we need to ensure quality treatment for all of our rescue animals.

—————————————————————————————————-

In 2007, shortly after A.A.R.F. began rescuing animals, Hannah and her 2 brothers and 1 sister were rescued from the Hilham area. Within 1 week, parvo symptoms became apparent. All 4 puppies were hospitalized – and only Hannah survived. This was A.A.R.F.’s first experience with PARVO, and it became their mission to learn everything that there was to learn about the disease. Ironically, Jennifer is dog-sitting Hannah this week. She lays below little Linda as if to tell her “I fought – so can you!”. Here are some photos of Hannah then and now.

This is Hannah in 2007 the day before she was diagnosed with Parvo.
This is Hannah, today, 1/24/10 - Healthy, Happy and VERY much loved and spoiled by her Mom and Dad.

Children Hold A.A.R.F. Donation Party

On December 5th, 2009, Tess Simpson (10 Years Old) and Lily Simpson (7 Years Old) held an A.A.R.F. party to help out all of the homeless dogs and cats.  They made hand puppets of animals and each guest brought animal supplies which were later donated to A.A.R.F.

Thanks Tess and Lily!  You girls are WONDERFUL!!!!!

Mama Wiggle Butts – Then and Now

Mama Wiggle Butts – a funny name, I know…but seriously, nothing else fit (She LOVES to wiggle her butt). She was our very first dog and came with a lot of baggage; 11 puppies on the physical end, and about a year on the streets suffering from abuse, neglect and hunger on the emotional end. She did not trust a soul – was very aloof, and would bond quicker with a dog than a human. We worked with Mama for weeks, and FINALLY she came around. This is Mama a few weeks after we took her in:

If you could see her now, you would never believe that she was the same dog. She learned quickly to follow the rules – and became our behavioral dog to test other animals’ temperaments since she was so easy to get along with. We tried a lot of tricks, but she was stubborn…she liked to hear us all laugh, so one day when she was sitting on the couch, she fell onto the cusions – falling straight back! Of course we all laughed, and she got up and did it again. We called it “Dramamine” and until the day she left us, she would still do the same thing – just for a laugh.

It took almost two years to find Mama the right home. A few had wanted her, but interview verifications always raised red flags and the decision was always made to deny the adoption. She was our only concern – and we knew in our hearts that one day someone would come along that would love her as much as we do.

Mandy emailed us, explaining that she wanted to rescue a dog that needed a real good home. She looked at EVERY dog we had in the program – the big ones, smaller ones, prettier ones, and not-so-pretty-ones. We liked her immediately, and thought of Mama. After telling Mandy Mama’s full story, Mandy requested a meeting. Here is what Mandy has to say now:

We have had Mama Wiggle Butts for about 3 weeks now. She is so awesome and we love her so much! AARF is an amazing organization with amazing people. These people care so much for the well being of their animals. I’m so thankful that they trusted me to be a good mommy to their very first rescue dog! Mama has been such a joy in our life. She has made several neighborhood doggie friends along with her new best friend Teddy, a bichon . We have a houseful of girls and each one of us adores Mama. She loves to go on walks around the neighborhood, and is really good with the leash. Nothing beats a car ride though. Every time we open the door she runs straight to the car! I encourage everyone to work with AARF. It’s awesome to own a pet in general, but for me it was so rewarding to help this dog that really needed a loving family to take care of her. Mama is doing so well! Thanks for everything.

Mandy
