Thanks to our new friends who made the “Boner Run” this past weekend, raising funds to help A.A.R.F. animal rescue efforts! Their last stop, PETCO, before celebrating life in memory of our fallen friend Carol Jean Sisung (BRAT).
BRAT started the Boner Run in an effort to help support Animal Rescue efforts. Friend Cindy Thompson has carried on the legacy. To our new friends, and Savage, Brat’s husband, we thank you!
We know that every day there are dogs that need our help… but this story touched our heart.
Hope is a Black Labrador Retriever / Shar Pei mix that was rescued from a park in Macon Co. where she had been abandoned after being hit by a car. The locals said that Hope had resided in the park after the wreck for “a couple of months”. Her rescuers named her Hope because they felt she had spent all that time in the park “hoping” someone would come along and help her. Hope was very malnourished and walked with a slight limp due to injuries sustained in the crash. She could not jump up on the couch and was very fearful of a leash leading her rescuers to think she’d possibly been abused by one in the past. They have been working with her on the leash issue and she is doing much better!
Dr. Thomas Holt took a look at Hope pro bono and said that the knob on her hip was shattered and this is an injury that can only be fixed by time and healing on it’s own. Her hip joint and socket have no damage and there is no muscle damage. Her rescuers report that she is already doing much better jumping and climbing than when she first came to them. The rescuers are financially unable to take care of Hope and would love to see her go to a good home. She does excellent with other animals and children. She has been around dogs, cats and a ferret! 🙂 They would love to be able to keep her but are both unemployed and at risk of losing their home and they cannot keep her at this point.

Cumberland County Animal Shelter is the place for the “Animal House, Open House!” this Saturday, July 30th from 10AM until 3PM. Thanks to the generous donations by the community, and from Wyndham Resort, the shelter will host a TREMENDOUS rummage sale to include furniture, patio furniture, entertainment centers, and lots of “Stuff”! There will be plenty of staff and volunteers on site to provide shelter tours, and conduct adoptions! Refreshments will be available, along with FREE adoption packs to anyone adopting a pet! This is a GREAT TIME to adopt – so come on out to the Cumberland County Animal Shelter THIS SATURDAY and support a GREAT CAUSE! From Interstate 40, Take exit 317 and head south on 127 towards Crossville. Follow for 6.5 Miles. Turn left onto Old Hwy Circle (White/Green sign on left) and make an immediate left onto East Lane. Follow east lane to the end (0.7 Miles) and you have arrived! Donations gladly accepted but not required.
As many of you are aware, A.A.R.F. works very closely with many low adoption rate shelters in this region. Our primary shelter focus in 2011 has been The Cumberland County Animal Shelter, and reducing the euthanasia at this shelter. We are working hard to put pre-adoption spay/neuter policies in place, transport dogs and puppies from this shelter to other shelters and rescues who are able to save these animals, while raising funds to purchase vaccines, wormers and other supplies that the shelter desperately needs. With the closing of the Humane Society in Cumberland County last year, who handled all of the city stray animals, the county shelter is taking in more and more animals – and are running out of space a lot quicker than before. In addition to the increased intake, A.A.R.F. is working to save more adoptable animals at this shelter than in the past, and working closely with the staff to identify these animals. All of this adds up to a tremendous amount of dogs to feed, and no food to feed them.
Director Jennifer Farley spoke with Kelly Darty, General Manager of PETCO store 1637 in Cookeville about this situation recently. A.A.R.F. has been the primary adoption partner for this store for the last four years and has developed a great relationship with the management there. Kelly requested immediate assistance from Paul Jolley with the PETCO FOUNDATION so that no dogs would go hungry at this shelter while we implement these new procedures. The request was approved, and the foundation donated well over 2000lbs of food to assist us in our mission. Currently, Cumberland County Animal Shelter is using approximately 1600lbs of food per month to feed their dogs.
We want to thank The PETCO FOUNDATION for their kindness and generosity. It would have taken us WELL over a month or two to raise enough funds to purchase this amount of food to keep this program going. Now we can use the money raised to assist with next month’s food needs, as well as vaccines and necessary veterinary supplies to keep the animals healthy, happy and ADOPTABLE!

A.A.R.F. has a big adoption weekend planned! The newly remodeled store features a new layout and a bright new look. In honor of PETCO’s National Adoption Weekend, A.A.R.F. will feature reduced adoption donations for dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. On Friday, A.A.R.F. invites you to come out to the “Feline Frenzy” Cat-Only Adoption Event from 12-6 PM. Cats and kittens will be looking for their perfect home, so come out and make a new friend.
Saturday’s events start out with the PETCO ribbon-cutting at 8:55. Doors open at 9AM and free professional pet photography will be offered for the first 30 PALS customers, so be sure to get there early! The sudden passing of San Francisco Bay Area based guitarist and animal lover, Dave Romero, from a brain aneurism was a tragic loss. As gifted and talented as he was loved by all, his gentle, caring nature was none more evident than in his unbounded compassion for animals, especially those sick, injured or in need of a forever home.
Friends and the local music community were quick to assemble fund raising and benefit concerts in an effort to offset the cost of a memorial as well as charitable contributions toward the animal causes that Dave so believed in. AARF has received a gift of $1,500.00 from these proceeds to honor the legacy of Dave’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of ALL animals.
Dave Romero’s loving spirit lives on in the hearts of all who have been touched by his life… both two and four legged.
